Duke Manufacturing, a world-class contract manufacturing company, experienced frequent downtime on one of their CR Onsrud Panel Pro routers. In this case, replacing the controller was the best solution to keep their machine in production.
Duke Manufacturing is an expert contract manufacturer that serves commercial, defense, and medical industries out of St. Louis, Missouri. Their company had a single-table CR Onsrud 145G16C Panel Pro CNC router with a failing controller. Although the machine was mechanically reliable, the original machine controller became a headache for the Duke. They would frequently experience unexpected downtime and eventually took this machine out of production. When looking for a permanent solution, Duke Manufacturing reached out to MachMotion.
An engineer from our sales department walked their team through the upgrade process. Once they understood what came with the integrated turnkey installation package, Duke decided to move forward with retrofitting their CR Onsrud 145G16C Panel Pro with a MachMotion 2000 series controller. As a result, they were able to keep the machine they already had in production and now with a full customer support staff backing them for the life of the control.
Once they provided the machine details, our engineering team got to work and designed a complete upgrade kit for their CR Onsrud 145G16C Panel Pro router. This included a new 21” touchscreen HMI interface, pre-wired electrical panels for the existing enclosure and new servos for all axes of the machine. They shipped the CR Onsrud 145G16C Panel Pro to our plant and our team didn’t skip a beat getting the installation started.
Our team began the process of the CNC retrofit by first removing the covers. Then, we carefully removed all the old hardware components. Among them were the old controller, wires, servo motors, and drives, as well as the electrical panel. Next, we took the step to identify all the I/O (inputs and outputs) that we plan to reuse. After that, we ran all the motor wires on the machine to the appropriate VFD or motor contactors. Once wiring and hardware set-up is complete, we powered up the CR Onsrud 145G16C Panel Pro.
As soon as our installation crew confirms that the CNC router is moving, we began setting up the software. Then, we make some test parts to make sure everything is cutting & running properly. Once we confirm everything is cutting correctly we move on to the last and final step in our CNC retrofit process, training the team. We go over where all of the basic functions are.
