CNC Retrofit: Common Questions

Straightforward answers to the questions shops ask

Process

Does my machine need to leave my facility for a turnkey retrofit?

No. MachMotion performs all turnkey retrofits on-site at your facility. Technicians travel to your location, complete the installation, commission the machine, and train your operators all without the machine leaving your floor. This eliminates logistics and rigging costs, transit risk, and the complications of moving heavy equipment.

What happens if payment is not complete before shipment or installation?

If payment is not complete before shipment or installation, a timed license may be installed on the control. That license can shut the machine down after 15 or 30 days until full payment is made and a permanent license is uploaded.

What happens to my existing CNC programs after a retrofit?

Existing G-code programs are typically transferable to the new control. MachMotion works with your current post-processor and CAM software to confirm program compatibility before the machine returns to production. In most cases, your existing programs run on the new control without modification. Where post-processor updates are needed, MachMotion helps coordinate that before the job is done.

What happens during MachMotion's on-site machine evaluation?

Before recommending a retrofit, MachMotion evaluates the machine's mechanical condition — spindle health, way geometry, ball screw wear, overall structure — to determine whether a retrofit makes economic sense. If the machine checks out, you get a fixed-price retrofit quote. If there's significant mechanical wear that would undermine the retrofit's value, MachMotion tells you before any money changes hands. (This is separate from the online CNC Risk Assessment quiz, which gives you an instant scored report before any machine is physically evaluated.)

What payment methods does MachMotion accept?

MachMotion accepts checks by mail, electronic checks, ACH, wire transfer, PayPal, and major credit cards. Credit card transactions are subject to a 3% surcharge. Additionally, we offer financing for those that qualify.

Timeline

Can lead times be expedited?

Yes, for an additional cost. Expedite lead times are typically about half of standard lead times unless otherwise noted.

How far in advance do I need to schedule a retrofit?

MachMotion recommends scheduling 4–8 weeks in advance for most retrofit projects. This allows time for the Risk Assessment, quote approval, parts procurement, and technician scheduling. Emergency retrofit situations (control failure, machine down) are handled on a case-by-case basis — contact MachMotion directly to discuss availability.

How long do upgrade packages take to be delivered?

Router and waterjet control upgrades are typically delivered in 4 to 8 weeks, while grinder, mill, lathe, and custom control upgrades are typically delivered in 8 to 12 weeks. These numbers are subject to change, talk with our sales reps about your specific machine to ensure lead time accuracy.

What are MachMotion lead times?

Lead times depend on the machine type, package, and when your order is placed. Router and waterjet control packages are typically faster than grinder, mill, lathe, and custom control packages, and final ship dates are confirmed when your order is reviewed.

How long does installation take to schedule?

Installation timing depends on the package you purchased and current scheduling availability. Turnkey installations typically have longer lead times, while hybrid and self-install support are scheduled on a first-come, first-served basis and should be booked as early as possible.

How long does a CNC retrofit take?

Most CNC retrofits are completed in 5 business days of planned downtime. MachMotion provides a specific timeline in the project quote so you can plan production around the downtime window.

When is the order considered delivered?

Parts and equipment are considered delivered when they are loaded on a common carrier at MachMotion or the manufacturer, or when the equipment is placed in storage. Shipment is at the buyer’s risk once it leaves that point.

When does lead time start?

Lead time starts once we have a signed proposal, the down payment (or PO if you have terms and no payment is required), and the handoff call is completed.

Warranty & Support

Does MachMotion offer a money-back guarantee?

Yes. MachMotion offers a full money-back guarantee on an upgrade package, but it is subject to specific conditions, a resolution period, and stated exclusions. If you believe there is an unresolved issue, you must notify MachMotion and allow a reasonable resolution period of up to 90 days. If MachMotion cannot resolve the issue to your reasonable satisfaction during that period, you may request a full refund.

Does the Production-Ready Guarantee apply to every project?

No. The Production-Ready Guarantee only applies to projects with an onsite MachMotion installation, such as Turnkey, Standard, or Commissioning packages. It does not cover non-MachMotion supplied parts or components of the machine.

What support is available after the retrofit is complete?

MachMotion provides ongoing technical support for the control system after the retrofit. Because the new control runs on a PC-based platform with standard components, parts are available and the system can be supported long-term — unlike the original proprietary controls these machines came with. Remote diagnostics are available for many control issues, reducing the need for on-site service calls.

What is MachMotion’s Production-Ready Guarantee?

MachMotion’s Production-Ready Guarantee means the items included in the MachMotion upgrade package are installed correctly and the software is configured to the agreed proposal. If something in MachMotion’s workmanship fails after the first 90 days of the upgrade and an on-site visit is required, MachMotion will come on-site at no charge.

What is not covered by the money-back guarantee?

The money-back guarantee does not apply to misuse, neglect, accidents, alteration, improper installation, unauthorized repair, force majeure events, malware or virus issues, purchases through unauthorized resellers, or concerns raised after the initial 30-day production period.

What warranty comes with a CNC retrofit?

MachMotion provides a warranty on the control system and all retrofit components installed during the project. The specific warranty terms are documented in the project agreement. The machine's mechanical components — spindle, ways, ball screws, frame — are not part of the retrofit scope and remain the machine owner's responsibility.
