Is a CNC retrofit cheaper than buying a new machine?

In most cases, yes. A new CNC machine with equivalent capacity to a well-built older machine typically costs significantly more than the price of a retrofit. The retrofit preserves the machine's mechanical value (frame, spindle, ball screws, ways) and replaces only the control system. If the machine is mechanically sound, the economics almost always favor retrofitting over replacement.
